Murdo Mitchell announces lead single 'Aztec Jewel' with his new EP releasing on 14th April 2023 via Icons Creating Evil Art
‘Aztec Jewel’ by Murdo Mitchell will complete his new EP before he embarks on his UK tour. The single will be released on 14th April 2023 via Icons Creating Evil Art.
Following on from a stellar 2022, which saw him release a flurry of exciting efforts including ‘Lies’, ‘Jaded’ and ‘Your Skin’, which garnered support from the likes of Earmilk, Wonderland and Ones To Watch, as well as over 50,000 monthly Spotify listeners. The singer-songwriter Murdo Mitchell now returns for 2023 with a new single to top off his EP ‘Aztec Jewel’.
This song sets the tone for the EP, as Mitchell marries his honest, vulnerable lyricism and bold guitar riffs and builds energy throughout the track. Of all the songs on the EP, ‘Aztec Jewel’ is the most upbeat, while maintaining the emotional intensity Mitchell is known for. The singer collaborated with Chris Bond, producer of Ben Howard’s first two albums, on the production and writing of the EP.
Mitchell explains the track, “Aztec Jewel is probably the most middle of the road song I’ve written but it just felt like it should go that way & so sometimes when you write a song you just have to go where the song takes you rather than fighting hard with it & trying to pull it into something that it’s not. It’s a song that rises and rises - when writing it I imagined my full band in a room all just jamming it out round after round & I’m sure that’s the feeling you’ll get when you listen to it in the last section.
I was fortunate enough to record this record with Chris Bond, who is responsible for some of my favourite records & when I went to his studio in Devon we got on great & we worked well together - we picked the song apart & the song was initially something that grew & took new forms. From the first demo to where it ended up are quite different - it just took a whole new journey that just felt undeniable.
One of my favourites to play live. I hope you enjoy it. Cheers”
In early 2023, Murdo Mitchell returned to deliver two new remixes of his breakthrough anthems. Norwegian producer WNDR added his distinctive flair to the vibrant offering ‘Ghosts’, while Swedish/American duo Flora Cash popped their remix cherry with their debut rework of Mitchell’s ‘Your Skin’. Both new releases are featured on the EP via Icons Creating Evil Art.
With support from Luke La Volpe across all English dates, this new run of shows looks to become his most high-profile excursion. Stopping off in some of the country’s most renowned and iconic independent venues, tickets are available to buy now and all confirmed dates can be found below.
